What is Phantom Limb Pain?
Phantom limb pain is pain felt in the area where a limb has been amputated. Although the limb is no longer there, the nerve endings continue to send pain signals to the brain. In other cases, the brain has retained an interpretation of pain regardless of what the nerves are signalling. Phantom pain can be mild to extremely painful.
Usually, phantom limb pain sensations will subside with time, but in rare cases, the pain will become chronic.
Treatment of phantom limb pain is difficult. Some treatments are heat application, medicines, relaxation techniques, and neurostimulation such as spinal cord stimulation
